Nature Center

Project Overview

In-Progress

The Homer Lake Interpretive Center, opened in 1974, is closed for renovations and . To provide an educational space that meets the needs of staff and visitors, the Forest Preserves are renovating the facility and planning an addition with the help of a contractor.

A temporary site has been set up at the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve -- see more here.

Thanks to the incredible support of our community donors, we have already raised significant funds toward the nature center expansion project. Fundraising is still underway and community support remains essential to completing the full vision. To donate, follow this link.

Major Grant Funds Outdoor Spaces
The Forest Preserves received a $600,000 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant award from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). We are excited to announce that this additional grant will fund outdoor improvements such as landscaping, accessible paths, and native plantings.

Together, these investments bring us closer to creating a welcoming and educational space for all visitors.
